Every city has a chance to host their summer festivity. The small town of
Roberson County, North Carolina cherishes their own weekend full of fun,
entertainment, and football. On what would feel like the hottest days of
the summer, Houston Texans Fullback Vonta Leach brings NFL Players
of the present and the past to not only mentor the players of the future,
but to show a community that they care.
Vonta will swiftly tell you that he never really needed for anything growing
up and that he is very fortunate to have the ability to say this. On the
other side of the coin, he knows that there are many kids and families
that cannot make that same statement.
“From where I’ve come from to where I am at now, I feel like to whom
much is given much is required,” Vonta says with pride. “For me, to be
blessed with what I’m blessed with, it is good for me to give back and help
it work for somebody else to keep going and they can come back and
give and it keeps the cycle going.”
Not only does Vonta keep that cycle going, he helps it grow. After an
amazing high school career rushing for over 4,600 yards and 75
touchdowns, The All-Conference, All-Area, All-County, All-State phenom
was headed off to East Carolina University on a full athletic scholarship.
Understanding the importance of foundation and education, Vonta kept
his head in his books more than in the jersey of opposing teams’
defensive players.
While making his presence felt on the field becoming the star player of
the he was developing the relationship with his line members on the Yard.
“Being in a fraternity embraces you in brotherhood and going through a
lot of things that will get you ready for not just football but for life later on,”
Vonta recalls with the hint of a smile. “We had a lot of good times at ECU
and some not so good times.”
Vonta knew that at the end of college came the day that he dreamed
about. Vonta Signed with the Houston Texans on October 9th, 2006.
Within months, Vonta was already giving money back to his community.
He went directly to his high school.
