Do you know what I love about magazines? I love that they are a means to
escape from reality. Look around you. We're stuck in an economy right now
that has everyone pinching their pennies, losing their jobs and making
tremendous sacrifices. Gas prices rise and fall. Some things are cheaper
than you've ever seen them before, and others only seem to have gotten
more expensive. You can get a brand new car now for less than $13,000
and with all the emenities of a luxury sedan...with better gas mileage! But in
the world of magazines, none of these things exist. In fact, it almost seems
as though the word 'recession' in the magazine world is something you do
after lunch to burn off that pizza you just ate.

Magazines allow you to escape into a world where people seem to have
lives much more entertaining and exciting than yours. It sounds funny, but
it's very true. A magazine is where you can go to learn ways to actually save
money--by doing an effective ab and leg workout at home; or bargain
shopping for the best tooth brush or plasma screen TV. Which brings me to
advertising. Flip through the pages of any magazine and we say 'Ooooh'
and 'Aaaaah' to the elaborately photographed pages of clothing designers,
automobiles, and electronics. Magazines don't care that it's a recession.
They advertise what they think you should be buying anyway! And it's not
that you should buy these things or that they're forcing you to, but it's
allowing to forget, even if just for a moment, that you can.

I've always loved magazines. I love the art direction, the photography, the
articles, the internal voice of the editor creeping through the pages to give
the magazine a personality of its own. That's what I try to do with Suavv.
And I hope that Suavv does have a voice that stands out amongst the
crowd. The world of magazines is witnessing a huge shift right now due to
the economy, which is the gradual decline of print publishing, and the
growing popularity of the online magazine format (or e-zine). I'm proud to
say that Suavv jumped on that before it suddenly became the eco-savvy
trend to do. But as we witness an age where everything is done
electronically anyway, (even buying your groceries online!) and more and
more people everyday have almost unlimited and abundant access to the
World Wide Web, magazines--whether online or in print--manage to do the
same thing: provide an affordable source of leisure entertainment.

How many times have you sat on the toilet and opened up a magazine,
only to find yourself sitting there long after you've finished what you went
in there to do? How many times have you forwarded an article to a friend
or family from an online site, or shared the page of an article or recipe with
someone of the same? People have asked me in the past, "Don't you think
that magazines will eventually start to fade out?" And my answer, time and
time again, is always, unequivicably,  no. Magazine's aren't going
anywhere. There's no burial ground for this long-standing journalistic
format. Magazines began in the 19th Century and have weathered the
storms of the great depression, world wars, the rise and popularity of
radio and TV. They braved big-screen movies, big theatre productions
and portable DVDs. They've seen the face of a bad economy before and
they've stood strong throughout. So do I think magazines will ever fade?
No. They'll adapt to the world around them the way they always have, and
in my belief, the way they always will.

We might not be the best magazine in the world, or the most popular. We
might not have the largest readership or the most advertisers. And maybe
we don't have the biggest celebrities or the most high-profile endorsers.
But we're still here. And in every issue we try to give our readers the best
of what WE have to offer. Whether we have one new article every 3
months, or a fully loaded and stocked new issue every four weeks, Suavv
is here to do what every other magazine is here to do: entertain, inspire,
teach and provide a world that you can, hopefully, even if just for a
moment, escape quietly and happily into.
